From Round 5 – Osborne end Brookers’ perfect start

The Holbrook Brookers were beaten by the Osborne Tigers 16.8-104 to 8.5-53 on Saturday.
The Holbrook Brookers made their long awaited 2021 home debut on Saturday and were searching for a fifth straight win to start their Hume league season, but went down to the Osborne Tigers 16.8-104 to 8.5-53.

In a contest that wasn’t dominated by any single player, the Brookers struggled to keep touch with the Tigers, trailing 4.2-26 to 1.2-8 at quarter time and 10.4-64 to 2.3-15 at half time before going down by 51 points at the finish.

Osborne had eight individual goal scorers, with Connor Galvin and Jamie Parr kicking three each, while Joel Mackie, Martin Bahr, Clancy Galvin and Edward O’Connell all landed a brace in the big win.

Hayden Smith was best in a losing side, and Ewan Mackinlay and Logan Hamilton were the only goal scorers to kick two in the game.

Not happy with the loss, Holbrook coach Matt Sharp admitted his side lacked execution and that the final score wasn’t a true reflection of the game.

“We probably should have went in even at quarter-time, we didn’t take three or four opportunities and that momentum on the quarter-time siren hurt us,” Sharp said.

“They executed better than us, they were a lot cleaner and they’re well-drilled.”

Holbrook stay third on the Hume League ladder, with Osborne keeping top spot and CDHBU moving to second after easily handling Culcairn 13.9-87 to 5.14-44.

In other Hume League round five matches, Henty defeated Lockhart 18.13-121 to 13.7-85, Howlong beat Brock/Burrum 17.12-114 to 5.12-42, Rand-Wallbundrie-Walla won on the road against Billabong 13.12-90 to 8.5-53 and Jinderra recorded their first win of the year when defeating the winless Murray Magpies 13.10-88 to 9.10-64.

The Brookers will get their chance to bounce back on Saturday when hosting the bottom of the table Murray Magpies at Holbrook on Saturday.

Lower grades account for Tigers

The Brookers are top of the table in the Hume League reserve grade competition and remain the only undefeated team after a low-scoring 7.9-51 to 3.4-22 victory over Osborne on Saturday.

Connor Smith kicked two in the win, and Matthew Bender also kicked a goal and was named best on ground in the victory over the Tigers.

Holbrook’s under 17s also remain unbeaten after five rounds, after a very tense 6.5-41 to 6.1-37 victory.

Jett Liddell kicked four goals in the win, while Ollie Southwell was named best on ground.

Keeping in with the winning form in lower grades, the under 14s were dominant 5.7-37 to 0.2-2 victors over the Tigers.

Jim Henry kicked three for the home side, while Hamish Livermore and Eli Toll both kicked a goal. Wil Jenkyn was named best on ground.

All lower grades will be back at it again this Saturday when hosting the Murray Magpies.

Netballers swept in seniors

It was tough reading for the Holbrook netballers, who were beaten in every senior age group by the strong Osborne Tigers.

A-Grade went down 73-30, B-Grade lost 43-26, C-Grade were belted 65-27, C-Reserve were well handled 46-20 and the under 17s lost 49-28.

The junior Brookers had some success though, with the under 15s winning 44-11, under 13s getting up 24-20 and the under 11s proving too strong, winning 20-12.

Holbrook, who are winless in A-Grade, get a chance to bounce back on Saturday, when taking on a Murray Magpies line-up who only have two wins next to their name.
