Border Mail – Round 18 – Review
HENTY full-forward Damian Cupido has admitted being overwhelmed by the hype surrounding his 100th goal against Rand-Walbundrie-Walla at Henty on Saturday.
“It was one of the more memorable days of footy I can remember outside of playing league footy,” Cupido said.
“It was unbelievable.
“It was just a cracker of a day.
“There was a big crowd and it was a bit overwhelming to be honest.
“As soon as I got out of the car kids were coming up and wishing me good luck.
“The under-14s and 17s ran out on the ground when I kicked my 100th goal and every cat and dog seemed to be out there.
Cupido, who kicked a career-high 15 goals for Mount Evelyn in 2012, sensed something special as Henty got on top of the Giants early.
“It was coming down really well,” he said.
“We have had rain or wind at Henty most weekends this year so it was good to get some fine weather.
“I’m only a product of what the boys do up the ground and they were sensational on Saturday.”
Henty’s 72-point win will give the Swampies plenty of confidence ahead of their first final against Brock-Burrum in a fortnight.
While Cupido was all class, Daniel Cox, Josh Klemke, Jarrah Maksymow, Heath Ohlin and Joel Price also created plenty of carnage.
The Giants were best served by Jeremy Duck and first-gamer Ty Voss.
Holbrook finished strongly to defeat a gallant Lockhart by 38 points at Lockhart.
Only four points separated the teams at the last change before Charles White, Brad Carman, Coby Ross, Andrew Mackinlay, Curtis Steele and Aaron Baker opened the match up in the final 25 minutes.
Culcairn defeated Murray Magpies by 64 points at Urana Road Oval.
The Magpies were competitive for a half before the class of the visitors’ Adam Eady, Jed Andrew and Tim Hallinan came to the fore.
Magpie coach Phil Packer came out of retirement to kick four goals in his final match for the club.
Jindera trounced Howlong by 103 points.
The Bulldogs made the running early with speedsters Dylan Pettingill and Ryan Speed warming up for the big Walbundrie ground with impressive displays.
Trent Castles was dangerous with six goals while Ben Dower and Jacob Millar also controlled play.
Howlong’s Ben Baker and Toby Pargeter finished the season on a high note.
Brock-Burrum overcame some early resistance to defeat Billabong Crows by 38 points and Osborne were too strong for CDHBU with Sam Rutland bobbing up again in attack with four goals.
