Eastern Riverina Chronicle – Round 3 Review
Murray Magpies further exemplified the evenness of the 2018 Hume Football League season with a thrilling one-point win over Holbrook at Holbrook on Saturday.
Holbrook has one win one loss and a draw.
Ash Murray proved the difference for the visitors kicking seven goals for the day, including a brilliant 10-minute spell of four goals to start the final term.
Leading by 26 points with eight minutes left, the Magpies’ discipline almost cost them the game as Holbrook kicked the last four goals of the game.
Josh Maher was sent off for striking, while several 50-metre penalties catapulted Holbrook back into a thrilling contest.
Best for Holbrook, in a below par performance, were Sam Harris, Alec Sullivan and the Carman brothers Brad and Luke.
Henty has continued its brilliant start to the season by travelling to Jindera and beating them by 36 points in another impressive showing.
Led by an electrifying game off half back by Daniel Cox, the Swampies led throughout after kicking the first five goals of the game.
Damian Cupido bagged seven goals at full forward, while the dangerous Jarrah Maksymow kicked four for the visitors.
Veteran ruckman Chris Willis was superb, with Shannon Terlich and Heath Ohlin solid throughout. Henty has now defeated both last year’s grand finalists in the first three rounds.
Trent Castles was a standout for Jindera kicking seven goals, while Ben Dower kicked two but had his colours lowered to Willis in the ruck.
Brock Burrum Saints were forced to come from behind at the last change to defeat a plucky Rand Walbundrie Walla at Brocklesby.
With former coach and Azzi Medalist Luke Schilg making a return to the field, the Saints overcame a two- goal deficit to win a beauty by 10 points.
Aidan Johnson was outstanding for the Brock Burrum Saints, with a best on ground performance.
He and Schilg both booted three goals.
The first quarter was crisp, fast football with each team kicking five goals. Myles Aalbers finished with four goals for the Giants and Todd Miller three.
The Giants finished with no interchange with Tom Simmonds and Mason Collins amongst the casualties with shoulder and concussion injuries respectively.
Osborne notched up its first win of the season, with a comprehensive 49 point win over the previously inform Culcairn at Osborne.
Osborne won every quarter and kicked seven goals in each half, with recruit Declan O’Rourke again outstanding. Connor Galvin was also prominent with four goals.
The Lions, who played brilliantly the previous week, were well below its best with just two goal kickers for the day and a goalless final term.
The Lions were best served by Caleb Simmons, Tim Haines, in his return from suspension, as well as on ballers Jye Shields and Dane Hallinan.
Culcairn has a massive home game clash this week with Jindera, with both teams having a win each, while Osborne head to rand to play the Giants.
Howlong remain unbeaten after they held off a determined Lockhart by 28 points in a tough encounter at Lockhart. The home side came out breathing fire to lead by 17 points at quarter time and maintain the lead at half-time by a single goal.
A nine-goal to four final half got the job done for the Spiders with ruckman Peter Hancock playing a starring role along with Manny Hughes.
Al Dilger kicked five goals for the visitors, while Steve Jolliffe capped off a 30 plus possession match with two classy goals.
Zachary Sheather had a great duel with Hancock, while Matt Endrez and co coach Jordan Harrington won plenty of possessions in midfield for Lockhart.
Former Coreen league rivals Billabong Crows and CDHBU played out a cliffhanger at Oaklands with the Power winning by just three points.
The game had a pulsating climax with Crows coach Al Austin missing a shot for goal in the final minute that would have clinched a home victory. The Crows looked in control at three quarter time leading by twenty points before Cal Butler, Russel Anderson and Andrew Phibbs lifted CDHBU to their first win.
Teenager George Sandral continued his wonderful season with a brilliant display. Nick Morris and Callum Dunstan were also excellent.
